Are you a Marathon Runner or a Sprinter?

Last week I had a meet and greet with Linda Basso (www.lindabasso.com) and not only is she an inspiring marketing coach, but she has deep insight into what makes us tick. In the midst of our conversation she pointed out that part of my secret sauce (i.e. marketing value) lies is my ability to see your business potential and when we are a fit, to help you move your business from where it is to where it could be. I know that “seeing potential” isn’t enough; it is my ability to uncover the real you, VISION what is possible for your business, and then build it with you that sets me apart. In a nutshell, I’m the talented Hollywood agent that creates stars from Midwest girls but for business, not the big screen. You have to decide if you want to do the work that comes with attention and success. When a new client embraces the vision of what is possible I am so excited—for both of us! When down the road something changes and that client decides to back away from the challenge I am crushed. Hey, it is hard to let go when you see potential! With all due respect, I understand that my vision is not for everyone and you certainly have the right to say no thank you. What this has taught me is being true to myself requires my being more selective in identifying the women (ideal clients) who are best suited for my visionary business building skills. I want to connect with women in business who are in it for the marathon, not the sprint. You build muscles either way but there is a difference between being successful in the short run vs. being successful in the long haul.

What are the criteria for being a marathon business builder? How can you self-identify your potential to build big, beyond what you know? Or, can you see that where you are now is right where you want to be? Here are 10 questions to ask yourself. In doing so, you’ll get a pretty clear picture of where you land on the business building spectrum.

1. Will you be “all in”? If you don’t fully commit to the process of building your business, growth and change will come slowly. Being committed means through thick and thin, you keep going.

2. Does taking risks excite you? You like the wild ride, where ever it takes you! Building business is not for the faint of heart and you will be pushed out of your comfort level in more ways than you imagined.

3. Can you stretch yourself? You will build muscles you didn’t even know you had and what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger!

4. Are you an action oriented person? Taking action is what will move you forward and the pace will be lively, probably beyond your current comfort level.

5. How are your balancing skills? Can you manage the demands of family, personal life, and building a business?

6. Is your business scalable? This is of utmost importance if you want to grow your business. Not all business models can move forward and support your vision.

7. Are you open to change? If what you are doing know won’t get you where you want to be, are you willing to do something different?

8. Can you delegate? Most businesses need more than one person to grow healthily.

9. Do you understand your limitations? Knowing what you don’t know and getting the help you need will serve you more than you can imagine.

10. Can you maintain self-care in the face of adversity? Your commitment to taking care of yourself is instrumental to both survival and thriving.
